Yurac Allpa - Ate Vitarte, outside Lima

“When I worked alone, it was very hard to sell handcrafts," says Anita Contreras Navarro, an artisan working with Yurac Allpa. "Thanks to God, in 2008 we formed this group and can get work when we share.”

The eight members (4 men and 4 women, along with their families) of the group Yurac Allpa depend on making ceramics to support their families.  They live in a dusty outburb of Lima called Ate Vitarte, without paved streets and running water.  They depend on the work coming from sales of ceramics to support their families.

While their sales have been low, they have looked at how they can be proactive in improving the situation, and have gone to work creating new samples, so they have more to offer their customers.  They really understand Fair Trade - what it is and how they can benefit.
