Ichimay Wari
Ichamay Wari - Lima
Maurelio Huaraca, Donato Oré, Emilio Fernandez, Raúl Castillo, Antonio Oré, Claudia Abregu, Carlos Diaz, Freddy Gutierrez
The
Ichimay Wari Potters live on the South side of
Lima.
All 12 of them emigrated from the Ayacucho
region during Peru's recent period of
political violence. Ayacucho was the area
hardest hit by the warfare which
pitted Peru's Armed Forces against the Shining
Path Revolutionary Movement.
These Ayacuchan artisans are experts in the
production of ceramics and textiles
and are a fascinating group to meet, given
their unusual history and internal
organization.
The group has been quite successful in their effort to identify new markets in which to sell their creations. They have maintained a commitment to contributing to the development of South Lima through active participation in the "Community Roundtable Against Poverty" and other socially-aware activities to contribute to their neighborhood's development.
